Four samples. One square foot each.

Every sample is woven at 12" × 12": the trade standard corner sample, exactly 1 sq ft. Nothing comes off a shelf. You pick the construction, the fibre and, on a hand-knotted piece, the knot density, and that is what goes on the loom. The first 4 are on us.

There are no photographs on this page. A sample is woven to your spec, so a picture of somebody else's would be the wrong object.

How it is specced

Three choices, in order.

Construction comes first, because it decides what the second choice means.

Tufted

Material only.

Homes and commercial alike. Wool, viscose, or wool & viscose.

Hand-knotted

Material, then knot density.

Mostly residential: bedrooms and living rooms. Wool, silk, or wool & silk.

Machine-made

Weight in GSM alone.

Mostly commercial. Specced by weight, 300 to 1200 GSM.

Knot density applies to hand-knotted pieces only, and GSM to machine-made only. A tufted sample is specced by material and nothing else.

Hand-knotted, Silk

What it is
Pure silk pile, hand-knotted around a cotton warp. You pick the knot density.
What it is for
Bedrooms and living rooms. Silk belongs where the piece is looked at more than it is walked on.

Hand-knotted, Wool & silk

What it is
A wool ground with silk worked into the motifs, hand-knotted. Same density ladder as the silk piece.
What it is for
Residential rooms that want the pattern to catch light without the whole floor doing it.

Tufted, Wool

Standard or high-twist, your choice

What it is
Wool pile, tufted. No knot density: a tufted piece is specced by material.
What it is for
Homes and commercial floors alike. It puts a large area in a chosen colour on a shorter lead time.

Standard or high-twist, your choice

What it is
High-twist wool with bamboo silk, tufted. Bamboo silk is a viscose, not a protein silk; we name it viscose and price it as viscose.
What it is for
Homes and commercial work that want sheen without the loom time or the price of silk.

Reading the number

Knot density.

Knot density is the number of hand-tied knots in one inch of a hand-knotted piece. The ladder runs from 6 to 14. Higher means finer detail and a denser pile.

Open design

6 knots per inch. Broad shapes and open fields. Paying for more density here buys nothing you can see, and doubling it roughly doubles the time on the loom.

Fine drawing

14 knots per inch. Small florals, thin outlines, tight curves. This is the drawing that needs the knots, and it is where the loom time is worth paying for.

On the back of a hand-knotted sample, count one inch across and one inch down. That is the number you were sold.
